Bursting onto the scene and turning heads and ears everywhere, The DamnCats are staking out their territory in the dog-eat-dog world of indie music. Hailing from Canterbury, this unsigned four-piece are redefining indie and putting their own, fresh spin on contemporary popular music. The band, comprised of Martin Jackson (guitar and vocals), Savannah Smith (bass and vocals), Tim Jackson (drums) and Michael Saeed (guitar), list their influences as The Strokes, The Libertines, The Smiths and Pearl Jam which certainly trickle through their debut EP entitled, ‘Lights Go Down’.
The DamnCats describe their sound as ‘Moving Shaking Heartbreaking’ and this is definitely the phrase to describe ‘Lights Go Down’, lyrics taken from the first track, ‘Liberation’. With upbeat, catchy riffs and a truly infectious chorus, clearly influenced by The Libertines, this is one tune that will have even the coolest kid tapping their toe. This is definitely a stand out track from the band and would seduce anyone into listening to the rest of the EP, the rest of which does not disappoint. ‘4am’ is next up and the infatuation continues with Savannah’s silky tones playing off the groovy bass line and bopping guitar. ‘Made Up Minds’ and ‘Choke’ complete the offerings from the four-piece, showing the diversity of the band. The former provides another upbeat track with snappy lyrics whilst the latter slows it down with a chilled out vibe à la The XX.
The DamnCats ooze charisma throughout the EP and show they have real potential. Having proved themselves to be as good live as they are in the studio, with a string of shows already under their belt, my words of advice would be to the watch this space as this is one band who are on the charm offensive with intent to spread their irresistible tunes.
